Why sofas smell in the rainy season

Between June and October humidity in Dhaka often stays above 80%. Foam and fabric absorb moisture from the air, and the sweat and skin flakes already in the sofa give bacteria and mould spores everything they need. The result is the familiar sour or musty smell, and on leather and rexine, white spots of mould in the seams.

Keep air moving

Pull the sofa a few inches away from the wall so air can circulate behind it. Run a ceiling fan for a few hours each day, and on dry, sunny breaks open windows for cross-ventilation. In ground-floor or basement-level flats, a dehumidifier in the living room makes a large difference.

Do not clean with lots of water now

A heavily wetted sofa takes much longer to dry in the monsoon and can develop mildew inside the foam. If you need a clean in this season, choose extraction or low-moisture methods, and clean on a day when you can run fans for several hours afterwards.

Leather and rexine

Wipe leather and rexine weekly with a dry microfibre cloth, paying attention to seams and the underside. If white spots appear, they are mould — clean them promptly with a proper leather cleaner rather than a wet cloth, which spreads the spores.

After the monsoon
